The Future of Palestinian Political Islamist Movements In Light of Regional and International Transformations and the Arab-Israeli Conflict
This study addresses the future of Palestinian political Islamist movements in light of profound transformations in the regional and international political environment. It focuses on the unique Palestinian situation as a political context marked by a lack of full sovereignty, where the liberation struggle intertwines with crises of representation and internal division.
Moreover, the study examines the political Islamist movements in the region as evolving political actors, influenced more by the current political system's structure. It also considers policies of exclusion or containment, and the redefinition of the public sphere, rather than by their organizational choices.
The study utilizes an analytical approach to examine the options pursued by the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization to address these movements. It also addresses the movements' choices in their political paths at the Palestinian national level and their paths of armed resistance against the Israeli occupation.
The study deconstructs the possible options for both parties, the limitations of each path, the factors contributing to the realization of each option, and the political and social repercussions of each.
The study finds that there are five major options, including: to reshape and reconstruct themselves into a political party rather than a resistance movement; to include themselves in the PLO by themselves with the acceptance of the PLO leadership; banning the movements by the PNA; creating an alternative political Islamic party by the PNA; continue as a resistance movement against the Israeli occupation. The study finds that the preferable option for both parties is to include the PLO and negotiate the proper conditions, in accordance with the earlier agreements in Cairo.
The study concludes that political Islamist movements are not heading towards complete disappearance, but rather facing structural constraints that may reshape their roles and forms of presence. Such a conclusion pushes them towards forced choices in a political environment marked by deadlock and the decline of previous political inclusion.
The predicament of political Islamist movements in Palestine, therefore, reflects, in essence, a broader crisis concerning the future of the Palestinian national political project, emphasizing its importance beyond individual factions and fostering a sense of shared challenge. and not a crisis of any particular faction.
