The article offers a concise historical overview of the phenomenon of political Islam since the beginning of the twentieth century, tracing the stages through which the relationship between the political Islamist movement and the governments in the Arab world, including Jordan, has evolved.
The growing weight and influence of the political Islamist movement in the Arab world has incited many ruling elites in several Arab countries against it. Over the past decade, following the waves of the Arab Spring, which has led to a crisis in the relationship between several Arab governments and the Islamic movement. Some Arab governments adhered to a coordinated campaign that resulted in the designation of the Muslim Brotherhood as a "terrorist organization" in some Arab countries.
Although Jordan has not adopted a hostile stance toward the group, preferring to prioritize Jordanian national interests over regional considerations, the Jordanian government recently announced a ban on the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan in April 2025, considering it an unlicensed group.
The article argues that the ban represents a new and unusual approach by the Jordanian state in dealing with a broad political and social movement in the Jordanian arena, one that enjoys widespread sympathy among the Jordanian people.
However, the article emphasizes that the Muslim Brotherhood has consistently demonstrated, throughout its long history in Jordan since 1945, its ability to overcome the challenges of its relations with the government.
Therefore, the article presents a scientific approach to maintaining national balance and stability, consolidating national ranks, and strengthening national unity to achieve and preserve the supreme interests of the Kingdom. The article suggests that such an approach could be achieved by calling on the Islamic movement to reposition itself, thereby enabling it to pursue its political and advocacy activities more effectively.
On the other hand, the article notes that the Jordanian state's wisdom, experience, and capabilities enable it to navigate transformations and crises within the policies of containment, rationality, and balance. Such potential underscores the need for dialogue between the government and the Islamic movement within a strategic national framework that resolves the crisis in the interests of the Kingdom and maintains national stability to confront any external threats.
Such an approach requires rethinking the creation of a strategic framework that balances external and internal considerations. It also ensures the revitalization of the Islamic movement's role within the framework of the state's higher interests, thereby preserving its stability, security, and prosperity while adhering to its national constants and Arab-Islamic identity.
